Optional Upgrades: Add-Ons for Your Deck, Pergola, or Carport

Every Deck Giant project — deck, pergola, carport, or pavilion — can be custom built with a range of options and upgrades. Here's what each one does, and roughly what it costs.

Deck Upgrade

Railing Styles

Wood, composite, cable, and metal-baluster railings — each changes the look of a deck more than almost any other single choice. Cable and slim metal balusters keep sightlines open for a view; painted composite railing gives a cleaner, more finished edge. We'll help you match the style to the house.

Custom Shape & Stairs

A deck doesn't have to be a plain rectangle. Angled corners, wraparound steps, and stairs built to follow the terrain or wrap around a feature like a hot tub or stock-tank pool all add real function and a more custom look — worked into the design from the start rather than bolted on after.

Polycarbonate Roof

In Colorado, we install the Hercules premium polycarbonate roof exclusively — Colorado's snow load and hail don't leave room for a lower-grade panel. Four-wall standing-seam construction gives real structural rigidity, and the system is guaranteed waterproof, rated for snow load, and wind-rated up to 139 mph. It blocks UV while still letting daylight through, and comes in bronze, clear, or ice white.

Metal Roof

For full shade and full weather protection — especially important under Colorado hail — a metal roof is the most durable option we offer. Available in R-panel or standing-seam styles and a range of colors. Panels are custom-ordered for each project, so metal roofing typically needs a longer lead time than other upgrades.

Privacy Wall

A slatted cedar privacy wall blocks the view into a neighbor's yard (or theirs into yours) without fully closing off the space or the airflow. It also works well as a wind or afternoon-sun break on an exposed deck or patio. Built in a range of slat spacing, angles, heights, and stain colors to match your pergola or deck.

Tongue & Groove Ceiling

A finished cedar or pine ceiling turns a structural underside into a real design feature — the difference between "there's a roof" and "this feels like a room." Available unfinished, stained, or painted. Note: this option needs a modern-style frame with flush beams and rafters, so it's not available on traditional-style pergolas.

Stain & Finish

Beyond looks, staining protects wood from Colorado's intense UV exposure and moisture from snow, extending its life and cutting down on future maintenance. Choose a natural cedar tone to bring out the grain, a solid dark stain for a modern look, or a two-tone finish for something more custom. A two-tone stain — black frame, natural cedar top — creates a modern look that mimics the appearance of steel posts and beams for a fraction of the cost.

Pergola Upgrade

Top Slat Spacing

The boards across the top of a pergola control how much sun gets through. Top slats are typically 2"x2" cedar boards. Standard spacing (around 12") lets in most of the light for around 10–20% shade. Tighter spacing — 6", 4", or 2" — blocks progressively more sun, with 2" spacing landing around 70–80% shade. We'll help you pick the right spacing for how the space gets used and which direction it faces.

Additional top slats start around $4/sq ft

Outdoor Kitchens, Fireplaces & Lighting

A pavilion, covered deck, or pergola can be built into a true outdoor living space — a built-in grill and counter space, a stone or masonry fireplace, recessed or fan-mounted lighting, and the electrical to run it all safely. We coordinate this work through our network of trades and licensed subcontractors — electricians, masons, and gas fitters — so it's permitted, code-compliant, and built alongside your structure from the start instead of bolted on later.
